Hi all,
I decided I want to learn to play blackjack. I know the rules of the game, but I want to start to actually play. But I am overwhelmed by information. Can someone please suggest what playing strategy and betting strategy to start with?

If you just want to learn basic strategy, just memorize the basic strategy charts. You don’t need to learn any betting strategies. Just bet the minimum (or whatever amount you’re comfortable with) on every hand.
It also helps to understand why you make certain plays. You hit less (and double and split more) when the dealer has a 2-6 showing because the dealer is a lot more likely to bust. You always split 8′s because a 16 is a crappy hand and starting with an 8 is a decent hand. You always split Aces because starting with an Ace is quite profitable.

I was in a similar situation as you a little time ago. Realize that blackjack can be a profitable game however, depending on the amount of decks the house advantage can be anywhere from 0.17% to 0.66%. If you want to start actually playing I recommend you join Bodog.com. They offer a casino school for each game and teach you how to make the percentage as much in your favor as possible. learning basic bj is important. this doesn’t require any counting system and doesn’t matter how many decks are in use. to win more times than you lose, you will have to add a count system. the most simple count the better for beginners and some old timers as well. the count system lets know when to really double down or to splint. betting strategy should only be from 1 unit to 4 units. this will limit your loses while you learn and keep the pit bosses off your back. also remember, you are playing to win for you, not everyone else at the table. play your hand the way you are suppose to and do not get mad when someone doesn’t play the way you know they should. just change tables and keep playing your game. lol.
If you are wanting to learn to count cards i suggest reading a few blackjack books. My personal recommendation for a beginners blackjack book is Knock out blackjack or Black belt in Blackjack. Consider finding a good animated blackjack multi-player computer game you can play offline so’s you can be certain an online casino isn’t playing head games with you to make you believe you can win [by letting you win when no money is involved]. Once you have the game you can set it up to keep track of various approaches and statistics as you play. You can test strategies by setting the machine playing against itself using those strategies and track it over millions of hands if you leave the machine on while you’re off living a life.

Keep in mind also that if you are going to play online, then any card counting systems will NOT work, the hands dealt online are based on a continuous shuffler so they use the equivalent of a new deck every hand. There is no shoe.
