But few if any ever focus their attention on the actual sportsbooks at which they wager. Some betting angles can be picked up simply by browsing your sportsbook’s website with a sharp eye and a clear head. For example, we found an article on the website of one of the most prominent online books in the world that gave a kind of overview of soccer betting. It was a simple enough article, a sort of “Soccer Betting For Dummies” kind of thing. Harmless.

But one sentence did catch our eye: “Generally it is wiser to pass on the draw bet in soccer unless you have a very strong angle.” At first glance it seems like an innocuous enough statement. After all, Precision Plays believes it is generally wiser to pass ANY bet unless you have a very strong angle (and that angle is always and only value).

What stood out about this sentence was that it was advice. All the other sentences in the article were devoted to simply explaining the many different ways one could bet a soccer game. But with this sentence, the book was actually giving advice on betting.

How cute.

As true gambler advocates, we can only pray that no poor sap actually takes betting advice from the guy who stands to make money if he loses. Translating this sentence from Crap-ese, it reads in English: “We don’t really want you to bet the draw in soccer.”

Of course, Precision Plays doesnÂ’t recommend you go nuts tomorrow and bet all the draws in soccer, but the simple fact that a sportsbook took enough time in a soccer betting how-to article to discourage a certain kind of bet should give one food for thought.

Another clue to explore is a sportsbookÂ’s wager limits. Few ever think about the reasoning behind them. For example, at a book we love and use daily, the limit on an NBA spread bet is $10,000, but on a college basketball spread itÂ’s $25,000. Why do you suppose that is? At the same book, the limit on an NFL spread is just $5,000. Perhaps these differences can be explained by the owners of the book being huge college basketball fans, but we doubt it.

If you look around at a lot of different sportsbooks, you’ll find that wager limits vary. In the above example, we used the wager limits of a sportsbook we use personally. This book can be considered a “sharp” book, one that caters to more sophisticated players with larger bankrolls. A “square” book is one geared more toward the recreational bettor. You can spot a square book easily enough by the large sign-up bonuses and numerous ads with skimpily dressed women in them.

At square books, the wager limits are different. Their limits are always much lower (their clientele have less money to bet) and their highest limit is always reserved for the NFL. At one square book, we found the following limits:

NFL sides: $2200; other U.S. sports: $1100

“But what does this all say about betting on a particular sport?” you wonder. Simply, the higher a wager limit the book has on a certain sport, the riskier a bet in that particular sport is for you. They feel they have a better chance of beating you in that sport and therefore are willing to take larger bets. The smaller the limit, the better YOUR edge is in that sport. The book feels you have a good chance of beating them in that sport and therefore will only take smaller bets.

The fact that at one book the NFL has a higher wager limit and at another a smaller wager limit actually defines the kind of gamblers using that particular book. It also defines the book, as one catering to either sharp players or square players. Once you know the type of book your are dealing with, the lines and odds they put up take on a whole new meaning.

As an aside, Precision Plays does not recommend gambling with a square book. If you begin winning with any consistency, they WILL stop paying you. The fact that they have to advertise so much and offer big sign-up bonuses reveals that they have a high turnover rate in clients – clients either get discouraged and quit betting (hopefully) or (worse) blow all their money and go broke. They need to constantly attract new players. The only value of a square book for the serious bettor is for lines and odds research.

We began this article talking about soccer betting and weÂ’re going to end it that way. At all books, both square and sharp, the limits on soccer bets are always among the lowest. At the square book we used as an example, they only take $550 max on a soccer bet – a quarter of what theyÂ’re willing to take on an NFL bet. At the book we use, the sharp book, the limit is actually lower, at only $500. Think about that for a second. They are willing to accept a $25,000 bet on a college basketball spread, but will only take a maximum of $500 on a soccer bet.
