Texas holdem is a game of probability. In order to win, the best strategy to use is to master the skill of calculating the odds. And that is where the expected value in Texas holdem comes in.
The expected value in Texas holdem is a number that describes the results of a number of actions. You play less hands and the less (but better) hands that you play will give you more money for your value. There are a few ways to determine these values.
A Texas holdem player is one who maximizes his return or minimizes his loss with each decision he makes. Expected value (EV) is essentially the amount one would expect to win or lose if this decision were to be repeated millions of times. Every decision you make, whether to raise, check or call, check or fold and check or raise has an expectation of success or failure. The decision that makes you lose money in the long run has a negative expected value. Folding on the other hand has zero expected value and is a better decision. Though in folding you neither lose nor win money.
In determining the expected value, it will involve calculations of odds. Here we go again with the odds thing. Don’t be intimidated by the task of calculating odds. You don’t need to be a math major, and you don’t need to crunch the numbers out to three decimal places, but you do want to have an accurate idea of whether or not you are being fairly compensated for the risks you are taking.
The most straightforward explanation of how to calculate pot odds is to compare the total number of unknown cards to how many outs you have, and then do some simple division. Take your totals outs, multiply by two and then add two. This is roughly a percentage chance of making your hand.
