What is a good number to double down (go for a higher payoff) in Blackjack?
As noted, good number to double down. I assume that means take one more card when you might feel you’ll beat the dealer and get double the bet back if successful.
Also, the dealer shows one card, and I’m trying to draw inforformation from that. If it’s higher do I think chances are greater he has a good hand? How high does the card have to be? I know it’s not an exact science but I want to try and use that info somehow. thanks
I’m editing my question to be more specific. To try the double down my total should fall in a range. One thought of mine was 14, 15, and 16. I want it high enough to stand a chance of going between 18 and 21 and not too high that it increases my chances of getting a bust too much. What do you think?

Does the Casino have any House Edge in Double Down in Blackjack?
Every bet I think the house is favored or has some sort of an edge –
splitting favors the house, I know insurance and surrender do
but is doubling down the one bet that favors the player ? Im thinking no since they only give you one card and the odds of getting a 10 is only 31% on a one card draw. and the odds of getting 19 or better are only 46%
since 17, and 18 are losing hands technically Im thinking doubling down has a house edge somehow ?
especially since if you win 6 out of 10 but lose 4 out of 10 on the 4 your losing DOUBLE every time so doesnt that put you at a disadvantage?
Why You Shouldn’t Knock The Double Zero
Roulette is a game with a long and rich past, having been played in stuffy land casino, originally only in the French Riviera, Monaco and the most exclusive casinos in the West End of London. As usually happens, when the Americans discovered roulette in the nineteen forties and fifties and “took it home” like every other great European sport and institution they had to alter it to suit their playing style, and add a little “razzmatazz.” They found that there is not a lot that you can do with roulette, but they still did something. They added an extra zero, which failed to make the game any more exciting. What it did do was to alter the odds considerably against the player and much more in favour of the house. Of course, Americans who are known for their patriotism favoured the American version which had to be better, and gradually the casino operators discreetly began to withdraw the European version, and before the penny dropped. And so the situation remained the same for more than fifty years, until online gaming began to appear on the scene, making for an alternative for American players, at least for those states where online gaming is legal.
For European players who discovered the tremendous advantages of playing online, there seemed to be no argument that the traditional European version would be the one that they would go for. That was until a few players began to figure out that playing on the American version had its advantages and that the double zero option could not only be neutralized but even turned to the player’s advantage if the covered their bets properly. What these players took into account is that landing on a zero or even a double zero pays the same odds as hitting any of the 36 numbers on the table. All that experienced and calculating online roulette players needed to do was calculate how much they would be required to cover if one of the two zeros comes up when the roulette wheel finishes its spin and work out their odds accordingly. Players who win consistently at online roulette have long since realised that the 35-1 odds that they can get if they hit a single number flatter to deceive, and they only have a real chance of winning consistently of winning if they “cover the table”. That can often entail laying out five hundred chips to win just twenty five.
Playing with this strategy means that no single number is more of a threat than any other, and the double zero should hold no more fear for a thinking player. One of the biggest problems that a player who wanted to cover the table in a land casino was the time limits that the croupiers placed between each spin. Online players don’t have this problem, as they can place their bets one time only, and let them stay in place for the duration of the session, and even go for a cup of tea in the middle. Changed days indeed.
In blackjack, would you double down on soft 18 against a dealer’s 3-6?
Soft 18 is an Ace+7. Ace can be counted as one or eleven, so it’s impossible to bust a soft hand. I’m in the habit of doubling down on any soft hand against a dealer’s 2-6 with the exception of soft 19 and soft 20. And I only stay on soft 18 if the dealer has an Ace, 2, 7, or 8 up (and sometimes I hit or stay if the dealer has a 9 or 10/face card up). Otherwise, if the dealer has a 3, 4, 5, or 6 up, I usually double down on soft 18 and win if the dealer busts. But recently I was playing 2 hands against the dealer. My normal bet was $30 on each hand because in the casino I was in you have to bet twice the min. of the table and it was a $15 table. On one hand, I had the urge and the chips in front of me (because I was winning) to jump my bet to $150 on each hand. On one hand I had 20 and stayed. One the other hand I had soft 18 and the dealer had a 3 up. I doubled down and pushed another $150 on the bet and caught a face card, which made my hand a hard 18. The dealer didn’t bust, but the dealer made 17. The dealer’s hole card was a 4 and drew another face card. I think that was lucky winning that one.
It seems players in general and dealers think it’s risky doubling down on soft 18. What do you think? That’s following basic strategy as well as my own strategy. I won big last time playing blackjack only.
Would you double down on soft 18 against a dealer’s 3-6 or maybe only 5 or 6?
Patrick: Those doubles on a soft hand is not banking on the fact of making the hand. I’m banking on the dealer busting. I usually don’t care what hand I end up with as long the dealer busts. There have been hands that I actually saved the table by doing it. For example, you say I wouldn’t want to get a 5 when doubling on soft 18, but I wouldn’t want the dealer to get that 5 either if it’ll make their hand (if they have a 6 up and a 10 as the hole card). I’ve had hands when after doubling on soft 18, I’ll end up with 13-16 and the dealer busts, so I won with a bad hand and sometimes it would turn out if I didn’t double down, the dealer would have made their hand.
How does zero or double zero in roulette wheel give advantage to the house?
While I was learning basics roulette, I am curious that how does house gets its advantage in roulette by zero or double zeros(American roulette)?
Can we bet on zero(s) and if yes, what is the pay out? Thanks
Thanks John F. Cleared few doubts in my mind.
I would like to hear from others what they feel about this game.
