Card counting: Who knows how to do it?

I’m learning to count, and I’m fairly confident in my ability, but I’ve only counted down one deck in front of my television. The question is this: When counting at a table, do you reset your running count or is it something that you keep track of from the moment you sit down to the moment you get up? The terms ‘running’ and ‘true’ counts confuse me. Also, how do you use counting with basic blackjack strategy? It seems like you would either want one or the other.

I would strongly suggest not going to the casino, at least not for profit, any time soon. When you say you have learned how to count, what system are you using? Hi-Lo, KO, Red Seven, Uston SS, Omega? Is the count you are using designed for the types of games in your area? Some systems are better for different games, and you would be well advised to learn a count that would be applicable in your area.

If using an unbalanced counting system, you would restart your count after each new cut. If you are using a balanced system, which most of the good ones are, you would adjust to the true count based on how many decks are left in play. This adjustment depends on many different factors, and I would suggest not playing until you have spent 40-60 hours counting, and adjusting to the true count in your home.

True count is reflective of what the count is, based on the decks left in play. The running count is based solely on the cards seen. If you play a 6 deck shoe and you have 4 players who each get 2 low cards (+1), a running count would be high. Alternately, a true count would recognize that there are still many, many low cards left in the shoe.

The ability to count cards is not hard. What sets a good counter apart from the hundreds of thousands who have tried to count in a casino is the ability to do it well. You hardly ever have a great advantage, and in some places, you may never have any advantage, even if you are a master counter. It depends on your ability to memorize indicies (these are the changes to basic strategy that are set out in strategy cards for each count. An example would be standing on 12v3 or 16v10, both should be hits for basic strategy players, but a counter realizes there are times when they should stand.)

I hope this helps some. Even if this is not chosen as the best answer, I hope you will consider what I have said, as I consider myself an average counter, and learned the very, very hard way early on that the money you have burning a hole in your pocket is better off in a CD until you can verify you have an advantage than being used on practice runs.

There’s also a thing about the timing of eating these candies that matters in keeping teeth healthy.  Because sweets are basically carbohydrates, they tend to create an acidic environment in the mouth for up to an hour from the time they are eaten.  This means that if your kids just can’t pass up on those Dip Dabs, Space Dust or DolliLollies, they can have them in one bunch now and then another later.  This is to allow the mouth to neutralize the acid left by the first bunch before the next one is introduced.
