Before I knew any better I used to think counting cards was a skill reserved for members of Mensa, or savants with Rainman-like abilities. I mean, who can possibly remember every single card that has been dealt from a shoe of 4, 5, 6 or however many decks and mentally compute which cards are remaining to be dealt?

The MIT blackjack team could do it. But then they’re a group of geniuses hand picked as the most gifted numerates from a university renowned to attract the best and brightest mathematicians from around the world. Give up on the possibility right. Wrong.

Counting cards in blackjack really isn’t as hard as it sounds. There are a number of methods used to count cards, and contrary to popular belief none of them involve memorizing every card dealt. One of the simplest is the Hi-Lo method.

Like all counting methods, the foundation of this system is based on the fact that a high card rich deck/shoe makes for favorable playing conditions for the player. The more ‘ten’ cards in the deck/shoe, the better the player’s probability of winning as they are able to make more pat hands and the dealer will bust more often when forced to hit. And effectively applying the Hi-Lo method of card counting allows the player to gauge how high-card rich the remaining deck/shoe is.

The best part is, there’s no requirement to memorize any cards. All you need to do is assign a value to each card; +1 for twos, threes, fours, fives and sixes; 0 for sevens, eights and nines; -1 for all ten cards. As each card is dealt, the corresponding value is added to a running count that you must keep from the first card dealt. This sounds very simple, but it is actually quite tricky to do when surrounded by distractions. And casinos as we know are distraction filled environments. You chat with other players, the dealer, waiting staff and also have a plethora of in-your-face sights and sounds to deal with.

A nice way to practice this skill is to deal yourself a deck and keep a running count. If your count is zero after all cards are dealt you got it right. Now deal yourself progressively faster and faster until the count becomes second nature.

The next little part of the puzzle is betting to the count. In simplistic terms, when your running count is high towards the end of the shoe, you increase your bet stake. If the count is very high (10+), you increase your bet stake considerably. Conversely, a negative count means there will be little joy for you in the remaining shoe.

Of course the above is all theory and should be premised by a couple of important considerations. First, most terrestrial casinos will kick you out when they see you betting to a count pattern. Second, counting at online casinos is useless as each deal is from a full shuffled (virtual) deck precluding the possibility of counting.

Those casinos just don’t seem to like customers winning too much!

I personally recommend using the Red Seven or KO Count card counting systems. They are basic systems that perhaps are the second easiest to learn. By using an easy system you sacrifice some potential advantage. However, a simple system counted correctly is better than an advanced system played incorrectly. Plus, with a simply system you can play a fast paced game, playing more hands per hour. All statistical advantages require time to bear fruit, so the more hands you play the better.

So what is the easiest system? That is the Wizard Ace/Five count system. Be warned, it is easy but not for the faint of heart. It attempts to counter the accuracy loss by using large bet spread. Any card counter must increase his bet when the odds are in his favor in order to beat the house. The difference between the minimum wager (played when at a disadvantage) and the maximum wager (played when at the maximum statistical advantage) is the bet spread. The Wizard Ace/Five count has a maximum bet potentially as high as 38 times the minimum. That means if you a $10 minimum, you must be prepared to wager up to $380 on a single hand. You must also have the bankroll to support that high of a spread.

Card counters are normally identified by their bet spread. With such a large bet spread, you may think the Wizard Ace/Five count may quickly get you spotted as a counter. On the contrary, the Wizard Ace/Five system is so basic; you are unlikely to get identified as a counter.

In addition, the Wizard Ace/Five offers little advantage. The system can be used recreationally just to gain comps from sustained playing time, but will offer little value beyond that.

So what is the Wizard Ace/Five? The system uses only 2 point values. Any five card played is +1. Any ace played is minus one. That’s it. You keep a running count starting at 0 and looking for fives and aces only. In addition, there is no “true” count, so you do not need to divide the running count by the number of decks remaining. With a 75% penetration, stand on soft 17, late surrender and re-splitting aces you can get a 0.22% advantage using the recommended bet spread.

The five card is an important card because it will not bust the dealer hitting a 16 and makes a 17 out of 12. Therefore the five is important. The ace on the other is beneficial to the player. Ace and Shuffle tracking exist just to track aces.

Now the painful bet spread. You bet the minimum wager on any zero or negative running count. For a positive count, you bet 2 times the minimum times the running count. This can potentially lead to a spread of 38 times the minimum assuming a six deck shoe. If you were to assume that all fives were played (4 cards per deck and 6 decks per shoe) and no aces played, the highest bet could be 48 times the minimum (24 x 2). I have heard that in simulations of a billion hands, the spread never actually got higher than 38 times. You must bet the proper spread in order to take advantage of the positive signal. Reducing the bet spread reduces your edge. The average bet in simulation is 2 to 3 times the minimum wager.

The Los Angeles Clippers had high expectations going into this season after making the playoffs last season and claiming the best team in L.A. crown. That crown has already lost all its luster with the season Kobe and the Lakers are having. But the Clippers have won three in a row and with their fourth straight win tonight they will see the .500 mark for the first time in a long time. A short three game winning streak doesnÂ’t sell me on the notion that this team is back and playing well.

The ClippersÂ’ three straight wins have all been at home and they have come against the Warriors, Grizzlies, and Bucks. None of these teams have winning records and a win over the Grizzlies is probably easier to come by than a win over the North Carolina Tar Heels. I would argue that Hansbrough is more of a man that Gasol. With all that being said, perhaps stringing some wins together going into the All-Star break can change the complexion of this season for the Clips and perhaps a win tonight and seeing the .500 mark can be a big lift. With tonight and SaturdayÂ’s games at home and then going on the road to play a weak Seattle team, returning home to play the struggling Bulls, and then going east to play the 12-29 Boston Celtics, the Clippers have a chance to grab back a hold of what has been a disappointing season to this point. If they are going to do this, tonightÂ’s game against New Jersey becomes pivotal.

The Nets have been playing very strong basketball of late with Jason Kidd looking like heÂ’s running around on 20-year-old legs again. They has won nine of 11 games before dropping two straight on their current west coast trip enduring one-point losses to Sacramento and Golden State. Let me ask you this. Will playing back to back nights on the road take a toll on New JerseyÂ’s legs tonight? I think the easy answer is yes. The hard answer becomes to what extent. The last time the Nets played on back-to-back nights on February 19th and 20th, they played very well looking better on the 20th against Orlando than they did against the Knicks on the 19th. I propose that New JerseyÂ’s tired legs wonÂ’t be what loses this game for them if they go down tonight. After losing two in a row by one-point, Kidd and company will be extra hungry to get back in the win column which theyÂ’ve seen a lot of recently.

If New Jersey loses tonight, it will probably be because of the absence of Richard Jefferson. New Jersey will miss Jefferson as they try to get back on track tonight on the road, but they have shown that they can be effective without him. New Jersey has had big fourth quarter leads in each of itÂ’s two one-point road losses showing explosive offensive play at times. The question becomes if the Nets can buckle down tonight.

The Clippers knowingly have the interior advantage but they havenÂ’t been utilizing it this season. Perhaps with Jefferson out, who accounts for much of New JerseyÂ’s rebounding and defense, the Clippers will finally be able to take advantage against a real opponent tonight.
