I personally recommend using the Red Seven or KO Count card counting systems. They are basic systems that perhaps are the second easiest to learn. By using an easy system you sacrifice some potential advantage. However, a simple system counted correctly is better than an advanced system played incorrectly. Plus, with a simply system you can play a fast paced game, playing more hands per hour. All statistical advantages require time to bear fruit, so the more hands you play the better. 

 

So what is the easiest system? That is the Wizard Ace/Five count system. Be warned, it is easy but not for the faint of heart. It attempts to counter the accuracy loss by using large bet spread. Any card counter must increase his bet when the odds are in his favor in order to beat the house. The difference between the minimum wager (played when at a disadvantage) and the maximum wager (played when at the maximum statistical advantage) is the bet spread. The Wizard Ace/Five count has a maximum bet potentially as high as 38 times the minimum. That means if you a $10 minimum, you must be prepared to wager up to $380 on a single hand. You must also have the bankroll to support that high of a spread.

 

Card counters are normally identified by their bet spread. With such a large bet spread, you may think the Wizard Ace/Five count may quickly get you spotted as a counter. On the contrary, the Wizard Ace/Five system is so basic; you are unlikely to get identified as a counter.

 

In addition, the Wizard Ace/Five offers little advantage. The system can be used recreationally just to gain comps from sustained playing time, but will offer little value beyond that.

 

So what is the Wizard Ace/Five? The system uses only 2 point values. Any five card played is +1. Any ace played is minus one. That’s it. You keep a running count starting at 0 and looking for fives and aces only. In addition, there is no “true” count, so you do not need to divide the running count by the number of decks remaining. With a 75% penetration, stand on soft 17, late surrender and re-splitting aces you can get a 0.22% advantage using the recommended bet spread.

 

The five card is an important card because it will not bust the dealer hitting a 16 and makes a 17 out of 12. Therefore the five is important. The ace on the other is beneficial to the player. Ace and Shuffle tracking exist just to track aces.

 

Now the painful bet spread. You bet the minimum wager on any zero or negative running count. For a positive count, you bet 2 times the minimum times the running count. This can potentially lead to a spread of 38 times the minimum assuming a six deck shoe. If you were to assume that all fives were played (4 cards per deck and 6 decks per shoe) and no aces played, the highest bet could be 48 times the minimum (24 x 2). I have heard that in simulations of a billion hands, the spread never actually got higher than 38 times. You must bet the proper spread in order to take advantage of the positive signal. Reducing the bet spread reduces your edge. The average bet in simulation is 2 to 3 times the minimum wager.

There are only a couple of “nevers” that apply to casino table games. One of them is NEVER reach into your pocket to bet more than your original buy-in, the other is NEVER QUIT A WINNING STREAK.

Let me share a story about one of my winning steaks. It lasted for an entire day and it was the greatest day I ever had gambling in my life.

It was not the most money I have ever won, but it was the greatest streak I was ever on.

Just to set the story line; we flew into Las Vegas on a Friday night planning on staying through Sunday afternoon, my bankroll was $1500 and my table buy-in was $100.

We had an up and down weekend through Saturday night and were about even.

We got up Sunday morning and after breakfast checked out of the hotel, left our bags with the Bell Captain, and planned on playing a few tables before heading to the airport for our afternoon flight home.

We were staying at the Golden Nugget downtown and decided to walk down to the Union Plaza Hotel and give it a try…this is where the streak began…I hit a craps table for about $3500, had one “helluva” run. We went back up the street to the Golden Nugget and hit another craps table for $900 or so, then went across the street to The Horseshoe and hit a blackjack table for another $150.

By this time my pocket was bulging with money, so I gave everything other than $100 bills to my wife. We called it the “crumbs”.

The winning streak continued ALL day, and everything other than $100 bills went in my wife’s purse. Every time I played that day I won, $180, $240, $460, $1290, $130 on and on it went.

We used the “crumbs” to eat our meals and pay for any expenses we had that day. I think we stopped for shrimp cocktail about four times.

We obviously changed our return flight and checked back into the hotel for the night.

Finally sometime late that evening I lost at two or three table in a row. The streak was over.

When we got to the room, my wife emptied her purse and had over $900 in “crumbs”…and I had thousands in $100 bills.

What a day that was! What a winning streak that was!

Had I stopped playing because of my flight schedule I might have still gone home a winner because of the first table, but would have not ended up with the thousands I did take home. I would have quit the streak before it was over and would have never known what I missed. But, because I rode it to the end I MAXIMIZED my winnings and had one of the best days gambling ever.

Just like life itself you have to have a game plan and be prepared to take advantage of any situation you might find yourself in.

If you are reading this article, chances are you already know that Sihanoukville, (Snooky), is a beach town in the south west of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Perhaps it is already on your holiday shortlist, and you are curious as to what it offers besides great beaches?

And yes, great beaches there are! All in all I could list five beaches within four miles of the town centre, all with turquoise water and white sand. That may well be enough reason in itself to get yourself over to this fascinating town, but in case there’s a rainy day or you want to explore, here are some other options.

Although still water related, a really great option for a day out is a boat trip to one of the many nearby offshore islands. Within thirty minutes from leaving the beach directly on a boat, you can find yourself snorkelling, diving or fishing off or around one of the adjacent islands. While water quality varies like it does everywhere, on the frequent good days, you’ll be dealing with clear clean water and an abundance of marine life from fish and crabs to exotic coral and sponges.

If you are a land lover, there are several islands that have a bar and restaurant onshore. Because I have done it first hand myself, I can tell you that you can be sitting at an island beach bar with a cold beer or wine unhand for around a dollar each, and ordering a quality seafood and rice lunch for around $3. All this with no mobile phones or bustle, and the occasional local cow or goat wandering past!

About twenty kilometres south of Sihanoukville sits the Ream National Park. Ok, there is a major naval base there, that manages to be pretty unobtrusive anyway, but other than that the only noticeable development is the local fishing village. The national park is naturally divided by the river of the same name that meanders to the sea here. You can wander round unescorted, but probably a better idea is to pay a small sum to one of the local guides who will find you when you arrive.

The choices range from a hefty hike though the jungle, seeing exotic birds, insects and perhaps troupes of local monkeys, or a more relaxing stroll along the river bank zones to the estuary. The river itself is worth mentioning as it is the home to pods of river dolphins, a shyer and smaller offshoot of their marine cousins, sporting a motley grey and cream skin. The Ream national park fits nicely as a full single day trip from Sihanoukville.

A final suggestion would be to throw nature out of the window completely and take a trip to the local casino. While it is not the size of a Las Vegas casino by any means, the basics are there. You can play the slot machines to your hearts desire or sit at a dealt game of baccarat, blackjack or roulette. You will find that a little money here is a lot, and free drinks and meals are part of the service.

Whatever you decide to do here, Sihanoukville is a truly fascinating place to come and relax.
